Sahih Bukhari 5475 — Mi'rad, Trained Hound, and Allah's Name

The mentioning of Allah's Name while hunting

Hadith About Halal Hunting With Mi'rad and Hound

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 5475

`Adi bin Hatim Narrated from:

I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about the game killed by a Mi'rad (i.e. a sharp-edged piece of wood or a piece of wood provided with a sharp piece of iron used for hunting). He said, "If the game is killed with its sharp edge, eat of it, but if it is killed with its shaft, with a hit by its broad side then the game is (unlawful to eat) for it has been beaten to death."I asked him about the game killed by a trained hound. He said, "If the hound catches the game for you, eat of it, for killing the game by the hound, is like its slaughtering. But if you see with your hound or hounds another dog, and you are afraid that it might have shared in hunting the game with your hound and killed it, then you should not eat of it, because you have mentioned Allah's name on (sending) your hound only, but you have not mentioned it on some other hound.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5475

This hadith about halal hunting gives careful rules from a question asked by Adi bin Hatim. He asked about game killed by a Mi'rad. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that if the sharp edge kills it, it may be eaten, but if the broad side kills it, it is beaten to death and not lawful to eat. Adi also asked about hunting with a trained hound. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم allowed eating what the hound catches for the hunter, but warned against eating if another dog may have shared in the hunt, because Allah's name was mentioned on the hunter's dog, not the other one. The text teaches care, certainty, and saying Allah's name in hunting.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The sharp edge of the Mi'rad is treated differently from its broad side.
  • A trained hound's catch may be eaten when it catches for the hunter.
  • If another dog may have shared in killing it, the game is avoided.
  • Mentioning Allah's name is part of the hunting guidance in the text.
