Abu Dharr Narrated from:

I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) while he was wearing white clothes and sleeping. Then I went back to him again after he had got up from his sleep. He said, "Nobody says: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah' and then later on he dies while believing in that, except that he will enter Paradise." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said. 'Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said. 'Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft." I said, 'Even it he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?' He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft, inspite of the Abu Dharr's dislike.Abu `Abdullah said, "This is at the time of death or before it if one repents and regrets and says "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. He will be forgiven his sins."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5827

This hadith about La ilaha illallah and Paradise begins with Abu Dharr seeing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in white clothes. The main teaching then comes in the Prophet’s statement: no servant says “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah” and dies upon that belief except that he will enter Paradise. Abu Dharr asked repeatedly about someone who had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم repeated the answer. The report also includes Abu Abdullah’s note that this is at death or before it when a person repents, regrets, and says La ilaha illallah. So the explanation must include both faith and the repentance note given in the text.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The testimony of La ilaha illallah is tied to entering Paradise in the Prophet’s words.
  • Abu Dharr asked repeated questions to understand the statement.
  • The text includes a note about repentance and regret before death.
  • The hadith should not be used to make sins seem light.
