حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ، بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم جَلَدَ فِي الْخَمْرِ بِالْجَرِيدِ وَالنِّعَالِ ثُمَّ جَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ . فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَرُ وَدَنَا النَّاسُ مِنَ الرِّيفِ وَالْقُرَى قَالَ مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي جَلْدِ الْخَمْرِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ أَرَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَهَا كَأَخَفِّ الْحُدُودِ . قَالَ فَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ .
Anas bin Malik Narrated from:
Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) gave a beating with palm branches and shoes, and that Abu Bakr gave forty lashes. When Umar (became the Commander of the Faithful) and the people went near to pastures and towns, he said (to the Companions of the Holy Prophet). What is your opinion about lashing for drinking? Thereupon Abd al-Rahman b. Auf said: My opinion is that you fix it as the mildest punishment. Then 'Umar inflicted eighty stripes.

This punishment for drinking wine in Islam hadith gives more detail than the shorter version. Anas reports that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم beat in the case of wine with palm branches and shoes. Abu Bakr then gave forty lashes. When Umar became Commander of the Faithful and the people came near to pastures and towns, he asked the Companions for their view about lashing for drinking. Abd al-Rahman b. Auf said it should be made like the mildest punishment, and Umar gave eighty stripes. The text shows two things clearly: the earlier practice of forty and the later decision of eighty after consultation. It also names the tools mentioned in the report: palm branches and shoes.
