Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 2139b

This hadith about Islamic baby names tells us that a daughter of Umar was called Asiya. Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم gave her the name Jamila. The report is short, but its lesson is easy to understand. A name with a negative meaning was changed to a name with a pleasant meaning. Jamila means beautiful or good, so the new name gave her a better form of address. This is why people searching for a hadith about good names often come to reports like this. The hadith does not discuss many rules or extra details. It simply shows the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replacing a disliked name with a name that sounded good and carried a better meaning.

What we learn from this hadith

  • A good name is part of respectful speech.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم changed a name when its meaning was unsuitable.
  • Choosing names with pleasant meanings is supported by this report.
