Sunan an-NasaiHadith Number 1382

`Abdullah bin `Umar Narrated from:

'Umar bin al-Khattab saw a Hullah and said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), why don't you buy this and wear it on Fridays and when meeting the delegations when they come to you?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This is worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter." Then something similar was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he gave a Hullah to 'Umar from it. 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), have you given me this when you said what you said about the Hullah of 'Utarid?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "I have not given it to you to wear it." So 'Umar gave it to an idolator brother of his in Makkah.

[1] It normally refers to an upper and lower garment made of the same material.Reference : Sunan an-Nasa'i 1382In-book reference : Book 14, Hadith 19English translation : Vol. 2, Book 14, Hadith 1383

Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 1382

This hadith about Friday clothing shows a clear exchange between Umar and the Prophet Umar saw a fine garment and suggested that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم buy it to wear on Fridays and when meeting delegations. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied that such a garment is worn by one who has no share in the Hereafter. Later, when a similar garment came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, he gave one to Umar. Umar was careful and asked about it because he remembered what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had said. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم explained, "I have not given it to you to wear it." Umar then gave it to his idolator brother in Makkah. The hadith teaches attention to what is worn, and also shows that a gift may be used in a way other than personal wearing.

What we learn from this hadith

  • A Muslim should be mindful about clothing and what is suitable to wear.
  • Umar asked for clarity instead of assuming the meaning of the gift.
  • Receiving something does not always mean it is meant for personal use.
  • The hadith shows careful respect for the Prophet's words.
