أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " اقْرَإِ الْقُرْآنَ فِي شَهْرٍ " . قُلْتُ إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ . فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَطْلُبُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى قَالَ " فِي خَمْسَةِ أَيَّامٍ " . وَقَالَ " صُمْ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ " . قُلْتُ إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ . فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَطْلُبُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى قَالَ " صُمْ أَحَبَّ الصِّيَامِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا " .
'Abdullah bin 'Amr Narrated from:
The Messenger of Allah said to me: 'Read the Qur'an in a month.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that. ' And I kept asking him until he said: 'In five days.' And he said: 'Fast three days a month.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that.' And 'Observe the most beloved of fasting to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, the fast one day and not the next. (Sahih).

Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 2400
This hadith brings together Quran reading and voluntary fasting. The Messenger of Allah told Abdullah bin Amr to read the Quran in a month. Abdullah said he was able to do more, and he kept asking until the limit mentioned was five days. The Prophet also told him to fast three days a month. Abdullah again said he could do more, and he kept asking until the Prophet told him to fast the fasting most beloved to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: the Fast of Dawud. The text explains that Dawud used to fast one day and break his fast one day. The hadith teaches guided effort in both recitation and fasting.
