Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 3807
Aishah reports that she heard the Messenger of Allah give a direct rule about vows. Whoever vows to obey Allah should obey Him. Whoever vows to disobey Allah should not disobey Him. This hadith about a vow of obedience makes it clear that not every vow is treated in the same way. A promise connected to obedience is to be carried out, while a promise connected to sin is not to be performed. The narration does not excuse wrongdoing because someone has spoken a vow. Instead, obedience to Allah remains the measure. This is a practical lesson for anyone who has made a serious promise: first look at what the promise requires. If it is obedience, follow it. If it is disobedience, do not use the vow as a reason to commit it.
What we learn from this hadith
- A vow of obedience should be carried out.
- A vow involving disobedience should be abandoned.
- Making a vow does not permit a sinful act.
- Obedience to Allah remains the standard for action.
