Shaddad bin Aws Narrated from:
I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has decreed proficiency in all things, so when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and spare suffering to the animal he slaughters" (Sahih)

Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 4411
This hadith places animal slaughter under the Islamic teaching of ihsan. The Prophet said that Allah has decreed proficiency in all things, then gave practical guidance for killing and slaughtering. A person should do the act well, sharpen the blade, and spare suffering to the animal. These instructions make preparation part of humane slaughter in Islam. The blade should not be left blunt, and the animal should not be made to suffer through poor handling of the slaughter. The hadith does not speak in vague terms; it names the tool and the intended care for the animal.
What we learn from this hadith
- Ihsan applies to the manner in which slaughter is performed.
- The slaughtering blade should be sharpened.
- The animal should be spared avoidable suffering.
- Good practice includes both proper preparation and careful action.
