Ibn 'Abbas Narrated from:

A woman from Khath'am said: "O Messenger of Allah, the command of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, to His slaves to perform Hajj has come while my father is an old man, and he cannot sit upright in the saddle. Will it discharge his duty if I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said to her: "Yes." Al-Fadl starting turning toward her, for she was a beautiful woman, and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side.

Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 5392

This hadith about proxy Hajj gives the same ruling in another wording and adds a clear scene of discipline. A woman from Khath'am said that the command of Allah to perform Hajj had reached her father while he was an old man who could not sit upright in the saddle. She asked whether her Hajj would discharge his duty. The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said yes. Then Al-Fadl began turning toward her, and the report says she was a beautiful woman. The Prophet [SAW] turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. The hadith teaches the answer to Hajj on behalf of an unable parent and shows practical care with the gaze.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Hajj on behalf of the elderly father is answered with yes in the report.
  • The father's inability to sit upright in the saddle is part of the question.
  • The Prophet [SAW] turned Al-Fadl's face away when he kept looking.
