Prophetic Guidance on Selecting Qurbani Animals
Selecting the right animal for Udhiyah or Qurbani is a vital part of Islamic worship. According to the authentic sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, specific physical conditions disqualify an animal from being a valid sacrifice. The Prophet explicitly forbade offering animals that clearly have one bad eye, are obviously sick, visibly lame, or so severely emaciated that there is no marrow left in their bones. Furthermore, companions like Ali noted that the Prophet commanded Muslims to carefully examine the eyes and ears of the animals, avoiding those with slit ears, holes in their ears, or cut tails. Following these clear prophetic guidelines ensures that our acts of devotion are sound, beautiful, and fully acceptable.
It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade sacrificing the Muqabalah, the Mudabarah, the Sharqa’, the Kharqa’ and the Jad’a’.”*
[1] See At-Tirmidhi , no. 1498: "He said: 'The Muqābalah is the one whose ears have been severed, the Mudābarah is the one with the sides of its ears cut off, and the Sharqā' is one with split ears, and the Kharqā' is the one with pierced ears.'" The explanation is from Abu Ishâq, one of the narrators there, as is clear from the version recorded by Ahmad, no. 851 (1:108). Sindi defined Jad'a' as the one with the cut nose, ear, or lip, but it is more specific for the nose as it is the most common case.Reference : Sunan Ibn Majah 3142In-book reference : Book 26, Hadith 23English translation : Vol. 4, Book 26, Hadith 3142
