Seeking Knowledge in Islam: The Ultimate Path to Divine Goodness

Seeking knowledge holds a profoundly elevated status in Islam, as illustrated by these authentic prophetic traditions. When Allah desires true goodness for a believer, He blesses them with a deep comprehension of the religion. This sacred wisdom is so valuable that it stands as one of the very few blessings a person should rightfully aspire to emulate, provided they act upon it and selflessly teach it to others. The pursuit of understanding requires immense humility, a lesson vividly demonstrated when the Prophet Moses traveled extensively across the sea just to learn from Al-Khadir after learning someone possessed greater knowledge than himself. Furthermore, the Prophet personally emphasized this blessing by embracing his young companion Ibn Abbas and praying specifically for Allah to grant him deep understanding of the Holy Book. According to Islamic scholars, these narrations collectively teach us that seeking, practicing, and sharing religious insight is a lifelong journey blessed directly by the Creator.

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Abu al-Darda through a different chain of narrators to the same effect from the Holy Prophet (ﷺ)

[1] Meaning that they are hastening and traveling upon them.[2] Hāfiẓ Ibn Hajar considered it incorrect that it refers to 'Abdul-'Azīz, saving in the biography of 'Abdullāh the son of this 'Abdul-'Azīz, that he - 'Abdullāh is this Al-'Umarī Az-Zāhid. See At-Taqrīb and At-Tahdhīb , and the narration from Ishāq bin Mūsā from Ibn 'Uyainah; its chain is Ṣaḥīḥ So take note, and the same is the case of what he narrated from 'Abdur-Razzāq.Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2680In-book reference : Book 41, Hadith 36English translation : Vol. 5, Book 39, Hadith 2680

Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

People say that I have narrated many Hadiths (The Prophet's narration). Had it not been for two verses in the Qur'an, I would not have narrated a single Hadith, and the verses are:"Verily those who conceal the clear sign and the guidance which We have sent down . . . (up to) Most Merciful." (2:159-160).And no doubt our Muhajir (emigrant) brothers used to be busy in the market with their business (bargains) and our Ansari brothers used to be busy with their property (agriculture). But I (Abu Huraira) used to stick to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) contented with what will fill my stomach and I used to attend that which they used not to attend and I used to memorize that which they used not to memorize.

Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

I said to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) "I hear many narrations (Hadiths) from you but I forget them." Allah's Apostle said, "Spread your Rida' (garment)." I did accordingly and then he moved his hands as if filling them with something (and emptied them in my Rida') and then said, "Take and wrap this sheet over your body." I did it and after that I never forgot any thing. Narrated Ibrahim bin Al-Mundhir: Ibn Abi Fudaik narrated the same as above (Hadith...119) but added that the Prophet (ﷺ) had moved his hands as if filling them with something and then he emptied them in the Rida' of Abu Huraira.
