Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1315
This cheating in trade hadith gives a very clear lesson in honesty. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) passed by a pile of food, put his fingers into it, and found wetness. When he asked the owner, the man said rain had fallen on it. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked why he did not put the wet part on top so people could see it. Then he said that whoever cheats is not one of us. The hadith is directly about hiding a defect from buyers. It teaches that honesty means making the condition of the goods visible, not hiding what may affect the sale.
What we learn from this hadith
- The wet part of the food should have been made visible to buyers.
- Hiding a defect in goods is treated as cheating.
- The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) strongly warned against cheating.
- Trade honesty includes transparency about the condition of items.
