Ibn 'Umar Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) Had A Ring Of Gold Made For Him Which He Wore On His Right (Hand). Then He Sat On The Minbar And Said: 'I Did Indeed Have This Ring On My Right Hand' Then He Discarded It And The People Discarded Their Rings. He Said: There Are Narrations On This Topic From 'Ali, Jabir, 'Abdullah Bin Ja'Far, Ibn 'Abbas, 'Aishah, And Anas. [Abu 'Eisa Said:] The Hadith Of Ibn 'Umar Is Hasan Sahih Hadith. This Hadith Has Been Reported Similarly From 'Nafi, From Ibn 'Umar, Through Routes Other Than This, And It Was Not Mentioned In It That The Ring Was On His Right Hand.

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1741

This gold ring hadith shows a clear moment of public action from the Prophet The report says he had a ring of gold made for him and wore it on his right hand. Then he sat on the minbar, spoke about the ring, and discarded it. The people then discarded their rings as well. The main lesson in the text is not a long legal discussion, but a visible example of leaving something after guidance became clear. The people watched the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم closely and followed his action right away. This Hadith also shows how public teaching can happen through both words and action, especially when the matter is connected to daily adornment.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught by action as well as speech.
  • The people followed the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم quickly when they saw his example.
  • A public correction can be made clearly when it affects many people.
  • Personal adornment should not be held onto when guidance calls for leaving it.
