Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1781

This hadith about Prophet Muhammad’s four braids gives a short description from Umm Hani. She says that when the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم arrived in Makkah, he had four braids. The narration is simple and should be read as a report about appearance, not as a broad ruling on hairstyles. The text also includes the comments of Abu ‘Eisa, who calls the report gharib, and Muhammad’s note that he does not know of Mujahid hearing from Umm Hani. So the main lesson is careful reporting: we value the description, and we also notice the hadith grading and narrator comments that come with it.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The hadith records a specific description of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم arriving in Makkah with four braids.
  • The report should be kept to what it says, without adding extra stories or rulings.
  • The narrator comments remind readers to pay attention to hadith grading and chains.
