Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1783
This hadith about the izar and the ankles gives direct guidance on how low the lower garment should hang. Hudhaifa reports that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم took hold of the calf of his shin, or Hudhaifa’s shin, and said this was the place of the izar. If someone must lower it, then it may be lower, but the izar has no right to be on the ankles. The meaning is clear from the text: clothing should be kept above the ankles. The report is also described by Abu ‘Eisa as hasan sahih, and he notes other routes from Ath-Thawri and Shu‘bah.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave a clear place for the izar on the lower leg.
- The text specifically says the izar has no right to be on the ankles.
- The hadith teaches care in dress without adding details beyond the wording.
