Abu Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Rukanah Narrated from:
Narrated Abu Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Rukanah: From His Father That Rukanah Wrestled The Prophet (ﷺ) And The Prophet (ﷺ) Won The Match. Rukanah Said: "I Heard The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Saying: 'Indeed What Distinguishes Between Us And Between The Idolater Is The Turban Over The Cap.'" [Abu 'Eisa Said:] This Hadith Is Hasan Gharib. Its Chain Is Not Established, And We Do Not Know Of Abu Al-Hasan Al-'Asqalani, Nor Ibn Rukanah.

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1784
This hadith about the turban over the cap contains two parts. First, it mentions that Rukanah wrestled the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم won the match. Then Rukanah reports hearing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم say that what distinguishes Muslims from idolaters is the turban over the cap. The text is about visible dress and identity, but it also includes a strong caution: Abu ‘Eisa says the hadith is gharib, its chain is not established, and he does not know Abu Al-Hasan Al-‘Asqalani or Ibn Rukanah. So the explanation should stay balanced and not turn this weakly established report into a broad ruling.
What we learn from this hadith
- The report connects a turban over a cap with outward distinction.
- The text also mentions the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم winning a wrestling match with Rukanah.
- The chain warning means the report should be cited with care.
