'Abdullah bin 'Amr Narrated from:

The Messenger Of Allah Said: "It Is Among The Greatest Of Sins That A Man Should Curse His Parents." They Said: "O Messenger Of Allah! Does A Man Curse His Parents?" He Said: "Yes. He Verbally Abuses The Father Of A Man, Who In Turn, Verbally Abuses His Father, And He (Retaliates And) Curses His Mother, So He Curses His Mother."

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1902

This hadith about cursing parents teaches that harm can return through our own speech. The people asked how a man could curse his own parents. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم explained that a person may abuse another man’s father, so the other man abuses his father in return. He may abuse another man’s mother, so the other person abuses his mother in return. The lesson is not only about direct insults. It is also about starting a chain of verbal abuse. In simple terms, a Muslim should not use words that open the door for his parents to be insulted. Guarding the tongue protects honor, family respect, and one’s own standing before Allah.

What we learn from this hadith

  • A person may harm his parents indirectly through his own insults.
  • Verbal abuse can lead to retaliation and wider harm.
  • Respect for parents includes avoiding speech that invites insults against them.
  • The tongue should be controlled before anger spreads.
