Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1974
This hadith about modesty gives a simple contrast between two traits: al-fuhsh and al-haya. The Prophet said that al-fuhsh is not present in anything except that it mars it, and al-haya is not present in anything except that it beautifies it. Al-fuhsh refers to obscene or foul behavior, while al-haya is modesty and shame in a good sense. The message is clear from the wording. Foulness makes speech and behavior ugly. Modesty adds beauty to a person’s conduct. This hadith is useful for daily life because it applies to words, actions, and manners. A believer should avoid rude, shameless behavior and choose modest conduct that brings beauty.
What we learn from this hadith
- Obscene behavior makes a thing ugly.
- Modesty adds beauty to a person’s conduct.
- Speech and behavior should be kept clean.
- A believer should choose haya over foulness.
