Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 218
This report teaches about Jumu'ah and congregational prayer with a serious warning. Mujahid says Ibn Abbas was asked about a man who fasted during the day and stood in prayer at night, but did not attend Friday prayer or the congregational prayer. Ibn Abbas replied that he is in the Fire. The text then explains the meaning: this refers to one who does not attend the congregation and Jumu'ah out of dislike for them, treating their right lightly, and being careless about them. So the lesson is not that private worship has no value. The warning is about neglecting public obligations while acting as if they do not matter.
What we learn from this hadith
- Private fasting and night prayer do not excuse careless neglect of Jumu'ah.
- The report gives a serious warning about avoiding congregation.
- The text explains that the warning is for dislike, belittling, and neglect.
- Worship should not ignore the rights of Friday prayer and jama'ah.
