Anas bin Malik Narrated from:

The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Said: "I Have Been Ordered To Fight The People Until They Bear Witness To La Ilaha Illallah, And That Muhammad Is His Servant And Messenger, And They Face Our Qiblah, Eat Our Slaughtered (Meat), And Perform Our Salat. And If They Do That, Then Their Blood And Wealth Will Be Unlawful To Us, Except With Its Due Right. For Them Shall Be Whatever Is For The Muslims, And They Shall Be Obliged With That Which The Muslims Are Obliged."

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2608

This hadith about testimony, Qiblah, and Salat gives public signs connected to the Muslim community. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said he was ordered to fight the people until they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, face the Muslim Qiblah, eat their slaughtered meat, and perform their Salat. If they do that, their blood and wealth become unlawful except with due right. They have what Muslims have, and they owe what Muslims owe. The hadith is about outward signs and public rights. It shows that belonging to the Muslim community brings both protection and duties.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The testimony of faith is joined with clear public signs in the hadith.
  • Facing the Qiblah and performing Salat are treated as signs of belonging.
  • Rights and duties are both mentioned for Muslims.
  • Blood and wealth are protected except with due right.
