Mu'adh bin Jabal Narrated from:

The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Said: "Do You Know What Allah'S Right Upon His Slaves Is?" I Said: "Allah And His Messenger Know Best." He Said: "His Right Upon Them Is That They Worship Him Alone And Do Not Associate Any Partners With Him." He Said: "And Do You Know What Their Right Over Allah Is If They Do That?" I Said: "Allah And His Messenger Know Best." He Said: "That He Will Not Punish Them."

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2643

This hadith about Allah's right upon His slaves gives a clear lesson in Tawhid. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked Mu'adh if he knew the right of Allah upon His slaves. Mu'adh answered with respect, saying that Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then explained that Allah's right is that people worship Him alone and do not associate anything with Him. He then asked about the right of the slaves over Allah if they do that. The answer was that Allah will not punish them. The hadith teaches the heart of Islam in simple words: worship belongs to Allah alone, and shirk must be avoided. It also shows how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught through questions.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Allah's right is to be worshiped alone.
  • Shirk is directly rejected in this hadith.
  • Mu'adh's answer shows respect when learning religious knowledge.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used questions to teach deep faith clearly.
