حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " إِذَا انْتَهَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى مَجْلِسٍ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ فَإِنْ بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ فَلْيَجْلِسْ ثُمَّ إِذَا قَامَ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ فَلَيْسَتِ الأُولَى بِأَحَقَّ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ . وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ أَيْضًا عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم .
Abu Hurairah Narrated from:
The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Said: "When One Of You Arrives At The Gathering, Then Give The Salam, And If He Is Given A Place To Sit, Then Let Him Sit. Then When He Stands, Let Him Give The Salam, The First Is More Worthy Than The Last."

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2706
This hadith about salam when entering and leaving a gathering gives a clear social manner. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that when one of you arrives at a gathering, he should give salam. If a place is given for him to sit, he may sit. Then when he stands to leave, he should give salam again. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم added that the first salam is not more worthy than the last. This means the leaving greeting also has its place. The hadith about gathering etiquette in Islam teaches that salam should open and close a meeting with peace. It also shows polite behavior when joining others: greet first, sit if there is space, and leave with a greeting.
What we learn from this hadith
- Give salam when arriving at a gathering.
- Sit if a place is made available.
- Give salam again when leaving.
- The farewell salam has value, just like the first salam.
