حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، رَفَعَهُ قَالَ " يَا عَلِيُّ لاَ تُتْبِعِ النَّظْرَةَ النَّظْرَةَ فَإِنَّ لَكَ الأُولَى وَلَيْسَتْ لَكَ الآخِرَةُ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شَرِيكٍ .

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2777
This hadith is commonly searched as do not follow a look with a look hadith. Ibn Buraidah narrated from his father that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to Ali: do not follow a look with another look, for the first is for you but the next is not for you. The message is easy to understand. A first look may happen, but a repeated look is treated differently in the wording of this hadith. The report teaches self-control with the eyes. It does not discuss every setting or every exception. Its focus is the difference between an initial look and a second, chosen look.
