Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2838
This hadith about changing a bad name gives one clear example. Ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم changed the name of Asiyah and said, 'You are Jamilah.' The report shows that a name with an unpleasant meaning could be replaced with a better one. The narration does not explain every naming rule, and it does not say that every old name must be changed. It simply records that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم changed this name to Jamilah, which means beautiful.
