Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3259
This Hadith teaches the habit of istighfar. Abu Hurairah narrated in connection with the verse, 'Seek forgiveness for your sins and also for the believing men and women,' that the Prophet said, 'Indeed I ask Allah for forgiveness seventy times a day.' The core topic is seeking forgiveness. The narration also mentions that another wording is reported from Abu Hurairah in which the Prophet said he asks forgiveness one hundred times a day. The main lesson is not to count other people's faults. It is to see how often the Prophet turned to Allah in forgiveness. If he made istighfar so often, a believer has even more reason to keep returning to Allah with humble words.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet regularly asked Allah for forgiveness.
- The Hadith connects istighfar with a Qur'anic command.
- Seeking forgiveness includes concern for believing men and women.
- A believer should make istighfar a steady daily practice.
