Abu Hurairah Narrated from:
A Man From The Ansar Had A Guest Spend The Night With Him, But He Did Not Have Anything To Eat But His Meal And The Meal For His Children, So He Said To His Wife: ‘Put The Children To Sleep, Extinguish The Torches, And Give Me Whatever You Have With You For The Guest.’ So This Ayah Was Revealed: And They Give Preference Over Themselves Even Though They Were In Need Of That.”

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3304
This hadith is about hospitality and giving preference to a guest even when a person is in need. A man from the Ansar had a guest for the night, but he only had enough food for himself and his children. He told his wife to put the children to sleep, turn off the lamp, and bring what they had for the guest. Then the verse was revealed: “And they give preference over themselves even though they were in need of that.” The hadith about giving preference over yourself shows a high level of generosity. It does not tell people to harm their families, but it reports this act of sacrifice and the verse connected to it.
