Ibn 'Abbas Narrated from:

The Prophet Was Performing Salat When Abu Jahl Came To Him And Said: ‘Have I Not Forbidden You From This? Have I Not Forbidden You From This? Have I Not Forbidden You From This?’ The Prophet Turned And Scolded Him. So Abu Jahl Said: ‘You Know That No One Has More To Call For Assistance Than Me.’ So Allah, Blessed Is He And Most High, Revealed: Then Let Him Call Upon His Council. We Will Call Out The Guards Of Hell.” So Ibn Abbas Said: “By Allah, If He Had Called His Council, Then The Guards Of Hell Would Have Seized Him.”

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3349

This hadith about let him call his council describes Abu Jahl confronting the Prophet while he was performing salah. Abu Jahl repeated that he had forbidden him from this. The Prophet turned and scolded him. Abu Jahl then boasted that no one had more people to call for help than him. Allah revealed the words, Then let him call upon his council. We will call out the guards of Hell. Ibn Abbas then said that if Abu Jahl had called his council, the guards of Hell would have seized him. The hadith shows the weakness of human pride before Allah’s warning.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Boasting about supporters does not stand against Allah’s command.
  • The Qur’anic warning is linked to the guards of Hell.
