Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

When This Ayah Was Revealed: ‘Then On That Day, You Shall Be Asked About The Delights!’ The People Said: ‘O Messenger Of Allah! About Which Delights Shall We Be Asked? For They Are Only The Two Black Things, While The Enemy Is Present And Our Swords Are (At The Ready) Upon Our Shoulders?” He Said: ‘But It Is What Shall Come.’”

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3357

This hadith about being questioned for delights reports the reaction of the people when the verse, Then on that Day you shall be asked about the delights, was revealed. They asked what delights they would be asked about, since they had only the two black things while the enemy was present and their swords were on their shoulders. The Prophet replied, But it is what shall come. The hadith shows that hardship did not cancel the coming reality of being asked about blessings. It also shows that future ease is part of what people should remember with gratitude and responsibility.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The companions connected the verse with their difficult situation.
  • The Prophet said the questioning about delights would still come.
  • Hard times do not remove the need for gratitude when blessings are given.
  • Future ease should be received with responsibility before Allah.
