Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3693
This hadith about Umar as one of the muhaddathun is often searched as muhaddathun hadith Umar, Umar given understanding, and virtues of Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that among past nations there used to be muhaddathun, and if there were one in his nation, it would be Umar bin al-Khattab. The report also includes the explanation from Sufyan bin Uyainah that muhaddathun means mufahhamun, those who are given understanding. So the teaching is clear: Umar is praised for a special type of understanding. The text does not ask us to invent hidden meanings. It gives a direct statement and then a simple explanation of the word.
