'Umar Narrated from:

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam: From His Father, From 'Umar, That He ('Umar) Granted A Stipend Of Three-Thousand And Five-Hundred To Usamah Bin Zaid, And He Granted Three-Thousand To 'Abdullah Bin 'Umar. So 'Abdullah Bin 'Umar Said To His Father: "Why Have You Given Preference To Usamah Over Me? For By Allah, He Has Not Preceded Me To Any Battle." He Said: "Because Zaid Used To Be More Beloved To The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Than Your Father, And Usamah Was More Beloved To The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Than You. So I Gave Preference To The Beloved Of The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Over My Beloved."

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3813

This Hadith about Umar and Usamah bin Zaid shows how Umar measured preference. He gave Usamah a stipend of three thousand five hundred and gave his own son Abdullah three thousand. When Abdullah asked why Usamah was given preference, Umar explained that Zaid was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم than Umar, and Usamah was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم than Abdullah. So Umar said he preferred the love of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم over his own love. The message is direct and moving. Umar did not make the choice based on family feeling. He honored what he understood from the Prophet’s love for Zaid and Usamah.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Umar placed the Prophet’s love above his own family preference.
  • Usamah’s honor is connected here to the Prophet’s love for him.
  • Fairness may require setting personal feelings aside.
  • The Hadith shows respect for those loved by the Messenger of Allah
