Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 587
This Hadith about glancing in salah describes a specific action. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah would glance toward the right and the left during prayer, but he would not turn his neck to look behind him. The text makes a difference between a glance and turning the neck backward. It does not say that a person should freely look around, and it does not discuss every type of movement. The main point is careful control in prayer. The Prophet’s prayer, as described here, included limited glancing to the sides without turning behind. This supports focus and proper prayer manners.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet glanced right and left during salah.
- He did not turn his neck to look behind him.
- The Hadith distinguishes a glance from turning around.
- Prayer should be performed with control and attention.
