حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ خَرَجَ مُعْتَمِرًا فِي الْفِتْنَةِ فَقَالَ إِنْ صُدِدْتُ عَنِ الْبَيْتِ، صَنَعْنَا كَمَا صَنَعْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم. فَأَهَلَّ بِعُمْرَةٍ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ أَهَلَّ بِعُمْرَةٍ عَامَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ.
Nafi Narrated from:
`Abdullah bin `Umar set out for Umra during the period of afflictions, and he said, "If I should be stopped from visiting the Ka`ba, I will do what we did when we were with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)." He assumed Ihram for `Umra in the year of Al-Hudaibiya.

This hadith about Umrah at Hudaybiyyah shows Ibn Umar’s careful way of following the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. During a time of affliction, he set out for Umrah and said that if he was stopped from visiting the Ka‘ba, he would do what they had done with Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. He then assumed Ihram for Umrah because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had assumed Ihram for Umrah in the year of Al-Hudaibiyyah. The text is short, but its teaching is strong. Ibn Umar did not make a new way for himself. He used the Prophet’s example as the model for what to do if a person is prevented from reaching the House.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet’s action at Hudaybiyyah became a model for later hardship.
- Ibn Umar prepared for Umrah while also accepting the chance of being stopped.
- When unsure during a trial, he looked back to what was done with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
- Ihram for Umrah was taken seriously even during a difficult period.
