Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4806

This Hadith discusses the prostration in Surah Sad. Al-Awwam asked Mujahid about it, and Mujahid reported that Ibn Abbas was asked the same question. Ibn Abbas answered by quoting the verse, 'Those are they whom Allah had guided. So follow their guidance.' He also used to prostrate when reading this Surah. The core topic is prostration during Qur’an recitation. The Hadith about Sajdah in Surah Sad teaches that the practice was linked to following the guidance of the Prophets. It also shows how scholars of the Companions used Qur’anic evidence when explaining acts of worship, without adding loose personal opinions.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Ibn Abbas connected the prostration in Surah Sad to Qur’anic guidance.
  • Acts of worship should be based on sound evidence.
  • Following the guidance of the Prophets is praised in the Qur’an.
  • Questions about worship should be answered with knowledge.
