Sahih Bukhari 4929 — Listen to Revelation
"And when We have recited it to you [O Muḥammad PBUH through Jibril (Gabriel) a.s.], then follow its (the Qur'an's) recital." (V.75:18)
قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: {قَرَأْنَاهُ} بَيَّنَّاهُ {فَاتَّبِعْ} اعْمَلْ بِهِ.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ {لاَ تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ} قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا نَزَلَ جِبْرِيلُ بِالْوَحْىِ، وَكَانَ مِمَّا يُحَرِّكُ بِهِ لِسَانَهُ وَشَفَتَيْهِ فَيَشْتَدُّ عَلَيْهِ وَكَانَ يُعْرَفُ مِنْهُ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ الآيَةَ الَّتِي فِي {لاَ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ} {لاَ تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ * إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ} قَالَ عَلَيْنَا أَنْ نَجْمَعَهُ فِي صَدْرِكَ، وَقُرْآنَهُ {فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ} فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فَاسْتَمِعْ {ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ} عَلَيْنَا أَنْ نُبَيِّنَهُ بِلِسَانِكَ ـ قَالَ ـ فَكَانَ إِذَا أَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ أَطْرَقَ، فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ قَرَأَهُ كَمَا وَعَدَهُ اللَّهُ. {أَوْلَى لَكَ فَأَوْلَى} تَوَعُّدٌ.
Ibn 'Abbas Narrated from:
Narrated Ibn `Abbas:(as regards) Allah's Statement: "Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith." (75.16)When Gabriel revealed the Divine Inspiration in Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , he (Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)) moved his tongue and lips, and that state used to be very hard for him, and that movement indicated that revelation was taking place.So Allah revealed in Surat Al-Qiyama which begins: 'I do swear by the Day of Resurrection...' (75) the Verses:-- 'Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith. It is for Us to collect it (Qur'an) in your mind, and give you the ability to recite it by heart. (75.16-17)Ibn `Abbas added: It is for Us to collect it (Qur'an) (in your mind), and give you the ability to recite it by heart means, "When We reveal it, listen. Then it is for Us to explain it," means, 'It is for us to explain it through your tongue.' So whenever Gabriel came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ' he would keep quiet (and listen), and when the Angel left, the Prophet (ﷺ) would recite that revelation as Allah promised him.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4929
This Hadith explains the verse about not moving the tongue in haste during the Quran’s revelation. Ibn Abbas said that when Gabriel brought revelation, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم moved his tongue and lips, and this was hard for him. That movement was known as a sign that revelation was taking place. Then Allah revealed the verses in Surah Al-Qiyamah, telling him not to rush and promising to collect the Quran in his mind and give him the ability to recite it. Ibn Abbas explained that when revelation came, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was to listen. After Gabriel left, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would recite it as Allah had promised. The Hadith teaches careful listening, preservation, and trust in Allah’s promise.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم felt difficulty during the coming of revelation.
- Allah taught him to listen when revelation was being recited to him.
- Allah promised to preserve the Quran for him and explain it through his tongue.
- After Gabriel left, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم recited the revelation as promised.
