Sahih Bukhari 7477 — Be Firm When Asking Allah
(Allah’s) Wish and Will
وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ} وَقَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {تُؤْتِي الْمُلْكَ مَنْ تَشَاءُ}. {وَلاَ تَقُولَنَّ لِشَيْءٍ إِنِّي فَاعِلٌ ذَلِكَ غَدًا إِلاَّ أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ}. {إِنَّكَ لاَ تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ}. قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ نَزَلَتْ فِي أَبِي طَالِبٍ. {يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلاَ يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ}.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ، سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " لاَ يَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمُ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنْ شِئْتَ، ارْحَمْنِي إِنْ شِئْتَ، ارْزُقْنِي إِنْ شِئْتَ، وَلْيَعْزِمْ مَسْأَلَتَهُ، إِنَّهُ يَفْعَلُ مَا يَشَاءُ، لاَ مُكْرِهَ لَهُ ".
Abu Hurairah Narrated from:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "None of you should say: 'O Allah! Forgive me if You wish,' or 'Bestow Your Mercy on me if You wish,' or 'Provide me with means of subsistence if You wish,' but he should be firm in his request, for Allah does what He will and nobody can force Him (to do anything).

This hadith about dua teaches a clear way to ask Allah. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told people not to say, “O Allah, forgive me if You wish,” or “Have mercy on me if You wish,” or “Provide for me if You wish.” Instead, a person should be firm in the request. The reason given in the hadith is that Allah does what He wills, and nobody can force Him. So the phrase “if You wish” is not needed when asking for mercy, forgiveness, or provision. A believer asks with need, hope, and trust, while still knowing that Allah’s will is above all things.

- Ask Allah for forgiveness, mercy, and provision with clear need.
- Do not add “if You wish” in this kind of dua.
