Al-Lu'lu Wal-Marjan 696 — The Book of As-Siyâm (the Fasting)

He who ate on the day of 'Āshûra should not eat during the remaining part of that day.

Al-Lu'lu Wal-MarjanHadith Number 696

Ar-Ruba' bint Mu'awwidh Narrated from:

The Prophet ﷺ sent a messenger to the village of the Ansâr in the morning of the day of 'Āshûra (10th of Muharram) to announce: 'Whoever has eaten something should not eat but complete Saum (fast), and whoever is observing the Saum should complete it.' She further said, "Since then we used to observe Saum on that day regularly and also make our boys (children) do so. We used to make toys of wool for the boys and if anyone of them cried for food, he was given those toys till it was the time of Iftâr (the breaking of Saum)".( Sahih Al-Bukhârî, Hadîth No. 181, Vol. 3) mentioned that observing Saum (fast) on the day of 'Arafah expiates the sins of two years, while observing Saum on the day of 'Āshûra expiates the sins of only one year. This indicates that observing Saum on the day of 'Arafah is superior to that of 'Āshûra.
