Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه narrated that a man asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , “O Messenger of Allah, how may I know when I have done good and when I have done wrong?” (He meant how he could find out what he did was approved by Sharī’ah (divine law), or not?) The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “when you hear neighbours say that you have done good, you have indeed done the approved but when you hear them say that you have done bad, you have done bad.” [3]
