حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الدَّارِمِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الْفَزَارِيُّ اكْتُبْ عَنْ بَقِيَّةَ، مَا رَوَى عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِينَ، وَلاَ تَكْتُبْ عَنْهُ مَا رَوَى عَنْ غَيْرِ الْمَعْرُوفِينَ، وَلاَ تَكْتُبْ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ، مَا رَوَى عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِينَ، وَلاَ عَنْ غَيْرِهِمْ، .
Abū Ishāq al-Fazarī Narrated from:
Write from Baqiyyah what he transmits on authority of those who are well-known, and do not write from him what he transmits on authority of those who are not; do not write from Ismā’īl bin Ayyāsh what he transmits on authority of those who are well-known or otherwise ’.

Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 80
This narration gives practical advice about hadith narrator reliability. Abu Ishaq al-Fazari told Zakariyya bin Adi to write from Baqiyyah what he narrated from well-known people, and not to write what he narrated from unknown people. He also told him not to write from Isma’il bin Ayyash, whether from well-known people or others. The report does not explain all the reasons, so the safe lesson is to stay with the instruction itself. In hadith authentication, who a narrator reports from matters. A report through known narrators may be treated differently from one through unknown or doubtful routes.
