Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 717

This hadith about announcing lost property in the mosque is narrated by Jabir. A man came to the Masjid announcing a lost camel. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم responded, “May you never find it.” The wording is short, but the message is strong. It shows that the Masjid should not be used for shouting out lost-property announcements, even when the lost item is valuable. The hadith does not say that looking for property is wrong in every place. It focuses on the Masjid and the act of making such an announcement there. The tone of the Prophet’s response shows that the Masjid has a purpose that should be respected.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Lost-property announcements should not be made in the Masjid.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم responded strongly to protect the Masjid’s purpose.
  • The report is about announcing a lost camel in the Masjid specifically.
  • The Masjid should not become a place for worldly calls and noise.
