Authentic Hadiths on Animal Sacrifice and Islamic Customs

These prophetic narrations provide important guidance on animal sacrifice practices in Islam, specifically highlighting Udhiyah, Fara', and 'Atirah. Some traditions state that the Prophet Muhammad forbade the ancient practices of Fara' and 'Atirah, declaring that they hold no standing. However, other narrations clarify that offering a yearly sacrifice or Udhiyah is an obligation upon families, alongside early rulings where Fara' and 'Atirah were called duties. The Prophet explained that instead of slaughtering a newborn camel for Fara'—which deprives the owner of milk and causes the mother camel grief—it is far better to let the animal grow to be used for the cause of Allah or given to a widow. According to Islamic scholars, these texts together outline how Islam refined historical sacrificial customs into meaningful acts of charity.

Narrated `Aisha: I twisted the garlands of the Hadis (i.e. animals for sacrifice) of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with my own hands. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) put them around their necks with his own hands, and sent them with my father (to Mecca). Nothing legal was regarded illegal for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) till the animals were slaughtered.

The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed him (to slaughter it as a sacrifice). But I do not know whether this permission was general for all Muslims or not. The Prophet (ﷺ) then went towards two rams and slaughtered them, and the people went towards their sheep and slaughtered them.

Malik) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said on the day of Nahr (Sacrifice): He who slaughtered (the animal as a sacrifice) before the ('Id) prayer. should repeat it (i. e. offer another animal). Thereupon a person stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, that is the day when meat is much desired, and he also made a mention of the need of his neighbour, and perhaps Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) attested it.He (the person who had sacrificed the animal before the 'Id prayer) said: I have a goat of less than one year of age with me and I like it more than two fleshy goats; should I offer it as a sacrifice? He permitted him to do so. He (the narrator) said: I do not know whether this permission was granted to anyone else besides him or not. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) then turned towards two rams. and he slaughtered them, and the people' came to the goats and got them distributed amongst themselves (for offering them as sacrifice).
