Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1003
This hadith about exaggerated mourning words warns against turning grief into loud praise and dramatic crying over the dead. The narration describes people standing over a deceased person and saying words like, “O what a great man he was” or “O how respectful he was.” The hadith says two angels are appointed to poke him and ask, “Is that you?” The message is simple: mourning should not become a show of claims and inflated words. A believer may feel sadness, but this report warns against speech that goes beyond a calm and truthful response to death. It teaches careful language at one of life’s most emotional moments.
What we learn from this hadith
- Avoid dramatic and exaggerated words over the dead.
- Praise should not turn into loud ritual mourning.
- Grief should be guided by truth and self-control.
- Death is a time for humility, not public display.
