An-Nu'man bin Bashir Narrated from:

The Messenger of Allah (S) said: "The Lawful Is Clear And The Unlawful Is Clear, And Between That Are Matters That Are Doubtful (Not Clear); Many Of The People Do Not Know Whether It Is Lawful Or Unlawful. So Whoever Leaves It To Protect His Religion And His Honor, Then He Will Be Safe, And Whoever Falls Into Something From Them, Then He Soon Will Have Fallen Into The Unlawful. Just Like If Someone Grazes (His Animals) Around A Sanctuary, He Would Soon Wind Up In It. Indeed For Every King Is A Sanctuary (Pasture), And Indeed Allah'S Sanctuary Is What He Made Unlawful."Another Chain Of Narration From The Prophet (ﷺ) And Its Meaning Is Similar Abu 'Eisa Said: This Hadith Is Hasan Sahih, It Has Been Reported By More Than One From Ash-Sha'Bi, From An-Nu'Man Bin Bashir.

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1205

This halal and haram hadith gives a clear rule for daily life. The lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear. Between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know well. The hadith teaches that leaving doubtful matters can protect a person’s religion and honor. It also gives a simple example: a person who grazes animals near a protected area may soon enter it. In the same way, someone who keeps going close to doubtful matters may fall into the unlawful. The hadith ends by saying that Allah’s sanctuary is what He made unlawful. So the safe path is to respect the limits of Allah.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Halal and haram are presented as clear in the hadith.
  • Doubtful matters should be avoided to protect religion and honor.
