Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1806
This Hadith about garlic, onion, and the masjid gives a direct rule of public manners. Jabir narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that whoever eats garlic, onion, or leek should not approach the masjid. The reason is understood from the wording around these foods: they have strong smells. The Hadith is not about mocking these foods or calling them bad in every case. It is about protecting the masjid space and the comfort of others who gather there. The text names garlic first, then adds garlic, onion, and leek. Abu 'Eisa graded the Hadith as Hasan Sahih and mentioned many narrations on the topic from other Companions. The main lesson is simple: worship spaces should be kept pleasant and free from avoidable harm.
What we learn from this hadith
- A person should avoid the masjid after eating strong-smelling garlic, onion, or leek.
- Masjid manners include caring about the comfort of other worshippers.
- The Hadith teaches attention to smell and cleanliness before public worship.
