Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1810
This Hadith about strong-smelling vegetables tells of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم staying with Umm Ayyub and Abu Ayyub. They prepared food for him that contained some vegetables. He disliked eating it, but he told his Companions to eat it. Then he explained, I am not like one of you; I fear that I will offend my companion. The Hadith does not name every vegetable in this wording, but it connects with the nearby narrations about strong-smelling foods. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not stop the Companions from eating it. He gave a reason for his own choice. This teaches care in speech and action. It also shows that personal avoidance of a food does not always mean it is unlawful for others.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم avoided the food for a reason connected to his companion.
- He allowed his Companions to eat the food.
- Avoiding a food personally does not always mean it is forbidden for others.
