Abu Shuraih Al-Adawi Narrated from:
My Eyes Saw The Messenger Of Allah, And My Ears Heard Him Speaking When He Was Speaking And He Said: 'Whoever Believes In Allah And The Last Day, Then Let Him Honor His Guest With His Reward.' They Said: 'What Is The Reward?' He Said: ' A Day And A Night.' He Said: 'And Hospitality Is For Three Days, Whatever Is Beyond That Is Charity. And Whoever Believes In Allah And The Last Day, Then Let Him Say What Is Good Or Keep Silent.
[1] See Ibn Ḥajar’s comments on number 6135 of Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī ; some of them said that “his reward” ( Jā’izatu ) is provisions for a day and a nights journey when the guest departs, and Ibn Ḥajar indicated approval of this view. In which case, hospitality is for three days, and “His reward” is other than that.Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1967In-book reference : Book 27, Hadith 73English translation : Vol. 4, Book 1, Hadith 1967
Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1967
This hadith about hospitality connects belief in Allah and the Last Day with two clear actions: honoring the guest and guarding the tongue. The Prophet said that whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest with his reward. When asked what that reward is, he said: a day and a night. He also said that hospitality is for three days, and anything beyond that is charity. The same narration teaches another key point: whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep silent. The hadith gives a balanced lesson. A host should be generous, and a believer should also be careful with words.
What we learn from this hadith
- Honoring guests is linked with faith in Allah and the Last Day.
- The guest’s special right is described as a day and a night.
- Hospitality is mentioned as three days, with extra spending counted as charity.
- A believer should speak good words or remain silent.
