Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 202

This Hadith explains iqamah timing in a clear and practical way. Jabir bin Samurah reports that the mu'adh-dhin of Allah's Messenger would wait and would not call the iqamah until he saw the Prophet come out. When he saw him, he would call the iqamah. The text also mentions a statement of some scholars: the mu'adh-dhin has more right over the adhan, while the imam has more right over the iqamah. The simple message is that prayer in congregation has order. The adhan announces the prayer, but the iqamah begins the standing for prayer, so it should be linked to readiness.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The iqamah should be connected to the start of the congregational prayer.
  • The mu'adh-dhin waited until the Prophet came out.
  • Prayer in congregation needs order, not haste.
  • The report separates the role of adhan from the role of iqamah.
