Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2918
This narration gives a strong warning about respecting the limits of the Qur'an. Suhaib narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that the one who makes lawful what the Qur'an prohibits does not believe in the Qur'an. The wording links belief in the Qur'an with accepting its prohibitions. It is not just about reciting the text or saying one believes in it. The person must not treat what it prohibits as lawful. The Arabic text also includes a grading note that the chain is not strong and mentions narrator discussion, so it should be used with care. The meaning in the wording is still clear: honoring the Qur'an includes honoring its boundaries.
What we learn from this hadith
- The narration links belief in the Qur'an with respecting its prohibitions.
- A person should not treat Qur'anic prohibitions as lawful.
- Recitation should be joined with acceptance of guidance.
- The included grading note means the report should be presented carefully.
