Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 47

This hadith about mixed counts in wudu gives a detailed picture. Abdullah bin Zaid reports that the Prophet washed his face three times, washed his hands two times each, wiped his head, and washed his feet two times. The same passage says other narrations mention that the Prophet performed some parts of wudu once and some parts three times. It also states that some people of knowledge allowed this and saw no problem with washing some parts three times, some twice, or some once. The main point is that wudu must be done properly, while the number of washings may vary within what has been reported. The hadith helps readers avoid thinking every limb must always have the same count.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet's wudu is reported here with different counts for different limbs.
  • The head was wiped, while the face, hands, and feet were washed.
  • The passage allows variation in counts when done within narrated forms.
