The Prophet Would Perform Wudu With A Mudd, And He Would Perform Ghusl With A Sa.

[1] It is a measurement of volume rather than weight. It is one scoop of an average man, with his two hands held together. Four of these makes up a Ṣā' . The weight of these measurements differ depending upon the substance measured.Reference : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 56In-book reference : Book 1, Hadith 56English translation : Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 56

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 56

This hadith about water amount for wudu and ghusl reports that the Prophet would perform wudu with a mudd and ghusl with a sa. The passage also says the hadith is hasan sahih. It then explains an important point from scholars such as Ash-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq: the meaning is not that more or less is never allowed, but that it is the amount that is enough. This keeps the lesson practical and balanced. The hadith teaches modest use of water in purification without turning the named measures into a rigid limit in every situation. For anyone learning wudu, the message is to use what is enough and avoid wasteful habits.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet is reported to have used a mudd for wudu and a sa for ghusl.
  • The passage explains that the measure means what is enough, not a strict ban on all other amounts.
  • Purification should be done with care and without waste.
