Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 729
This narration from Aishah brings together two points: the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم would kiss and fondle while fasting, and he had the greatest control over himself. The report itself explains how it should be read. It is not a call to careless behavior during a fast. It is a hadith about kissing and fondling while fasting, but it is also a hadith about self-control. Abu Isa’s note says the meaning of “li irbihi” is “his self,” which keeps the focus on inner control. A fasting person who reads this should notice both sides: the action is reported, and the ability to remain in control is highlighted in the same sentence.
What we learn from this hadith
- The action mentioned in the hadith is tied to self-control.
- A fasting person should not ignore the risk of desire overtaking judgment.
- The wording helps explain the phrase as control over oneself.
- The narration teaches balance, not carelessness.
